Can a plumber fix this?

Our bathroom sink is porcelain and has a silver plug in it. The silver sort of base of the plug hole fits neatly Over the plug hole opening except for a length of about an inch where there is a small gap! It looks like the silver fixture is sort of held in place with either a washer or some sort of silicone?! Apart from this one segment of the circle where there is this tiny gap between the metal and the sink.

Can we replace simply the plug hole metal bit or does it need a whole new sink?

Or can the small hole be filled somehow?

Can you upload a photo- it’s a bit difficult to get a mental picture.

Yes here it is - do you see it on the right hand side there?

Your phone is creating a shadow. Is that small gap on the right causing a leak?

If so you can gun it with silicone.

Not hard to replace a waste. Abouta 30 min job for me. A plumber would charge for an hour+ and would be in the range of £75+ supply and fix.

If it was me I would put a pop up waste in

Tom. Thank you! Sorry it seems easy for me to see it as I know where it is! It’s that small gap on the right hand side of the metal plate (not the up and down plug bit of metal). So in the picture the black line starting at roughly 2pm and finishing at 5pm if you work round the silver plate.

It doesn’t appear to be leaking but the water must surely be going in there and collecting somewhere.

Sounds like it is fixable though which is great - not something I can do so will get hold of a plumber. I don’t know the technical words for all these sink parts 😄😄

It looks to me as the waste unit has not been centred correctly and the black line is the washer the waste unit beds onto - in my view it’s a simple adjustment, certainly not a new sink.
Under the sink there should a large ‘nut’ to tighten the waste unit onto the sink and avoid leaks - there will be a washer above and below the sink. Undo the ‘nut’ slightly which will loosen the waste (plug) unit, recentre and then retighten. The success of this will depend on how long the unit has been fitted as the washers could be compressed or perished and need replacing.

You’re right though, a pop up waste - if it’s what I think it is - sounds a good idea. I think we have one on our shower

Thank you, It’s not long been fitted I just didn’t notice at the time annoyingly. Loosening the underneath and realigning sounds like a good first step as I might be able to have a go at that! And if all else fails I’ll call the plumber!

The good thing is they don't get clogged with hair. A big problem in our house and it's not me! Mine is 8mm long not 500mm!

Not expensive, or hard to replace, this is a basic one from toolstation, just to give you an idea of price
