We just did this in February.
Flew into San Francisco took a taxi approx $60 to hotel Zephyr good location near Fishermans wharf, fun courtyard, free reusable water bottle and bike hire included but no kids sizes or helmets. 2 nights (we’d been before)
Picked up a hire car drove to Monterey via the mystery spot.
Stayed at the Hotel Pacific large rooms with kitchenettes good breakfast included 1 night $20 parking
17 mile drive to Carmel by the sea stayed at the comfort inn cheap and cheerful, good breakfast, free parking. 1 night
Big Sur to Cambria stayed at the Fogcatcher Inn free parking, breakfast included, lovely hotel with a pool and hot tub which was warm enough to use in February 1 night
Santa Barbara via Solvang stayed at the West Beach Inn free parking, breakfast included pool and hot tub nice enough but nothing special 1 night
Universal studios stayed at the Garland lovely hotel parking $25
But a free shuttle/ trolley to universal no breakfast included. We made the most of voodoo donuts from city walk 😋 1 night
Marina del Ray stayed at the Foghorn Harbour Inn free parking, breakfast included and if you upgraded to a harbour view room you got a $50 voucher for the restaurant next door which was the Cheesecake Factory fairly basic but clean. 1 night
Disneyland Wyndham Gardens 4 nights newly renovated, very friendly helpful staff, free parking no breakfast included. It was probably a little too far away the walk back and forth seemed to get longer each time but it was close to the Cheesecake Factory.
We made a lot of stops but this suited us as we didn’t want long drives and we were usually at our destination before lunch time giving us plenty of time to do the things we wanted.
The Pacific coast highway was very quiet in February and we were lucky with the weather sunshine every day and no fog
Hope this is useful. If there is anything else I can help with just ask!
Have fun planning I booked all free cancellations.

We did a similar mini road trip in September last year - 3 nights in San Francisco (not long enough, it's an amazing city and we can't wait to go back), 1 night Carmel by the sea, 1 night Morro Bay, 1 night Santa Barbara, 4 nights Grand Californian.
Things we enjoyed which I don't think have already been mentioned were watching the cable car turntable in SF, eating In'N'Out Burgers, visiting Hearst Castle and doing a winery tour.
Happy planning!

While I have never driven from SF to LA - it is quite a distance - I wanted to share something I did do in 2004.

I flew to SFO and we rented a car to drive to Caramel. I had a cousin get married on the golf course at Pebble Beach. Caramel is BEAUTIFUL. We went in late September/early October, so it was a bit cool, but the town and its b&bs are so quaint. We did go to Monterey as it is near by. After the wedding my mom and I went back to SF and stayed in my cousins' apartment while she was on her honeymoon. We did some tourist stuff in the day we were there, but no Alkatraz or Disney (it wasn't open then).

My sister lives there and I was supposed to go in late September, but now she is moving to Bend, OR...so I guess I am going there.

While the drive down the coast would be very nice, you probably want to budget a week for that - between San Francisco, various gems along the coast and Anaheim. Good luck!

Thank you. It’s going to be quite a job deciding. If anyone has read my previous reports you’ll know my eldest daughter is visually impaired so a lot of the things wouldn’t be great for her. Me and DW watched on YouTube whale watching in Monterrey and thought it looked amazing but it would be unfair on my daughter so we have to be careful with the sightseeing aspect. Definitely Disneyland but will take a long time to decide on the rest of the plan
