Anyone recommend an area or hotel to stay in Venice for a 4 nights stay?

I would look at airbnb or similar. Hotels are very expensive. I stayed in San Marco and had easy access to everywhere I wanted to visit. I've circled the areas I would happily stay in.

We've stayed at Hotel Bisanzio 5 times in recent years - just off Riva Schiavoni the waterfront beside San Marco. Sometimes double, triple or family 4 room depending who came with us. All lovely rooms with a good breakfast. San Zaccaria is the closest vaporetto/ Alilaguna stop with excellent choice of routes.

We visited Venice 2 years ago and booked exactly the same B&B for our trip this summer... 21st of 453 B&Bs in Venice on TripAdvisor and fab reviews on Booking.com. I booked through them again for this summer but Mattia, the owner, emailed me and said it would be cheaper going through their website. Not sure when you are planning on going but they do book up really quickly.
We were based in Cannaregia so away from the hustle and bustle but we walked everywhere from there and found some fantastic, non touristy places to eat and drink. This isn't a top hotel, more a typical Venetian B&B... can't wait to go back in two weeks.

We stayed at the Hilton Molino Stucky. It's on an island across from Venice. You can get the free hotel boat over or get the vaparetto. 5 mins is all it takes. The hotel itself is stunning and if you can get a good deal I would definetly recommend it. The breakfast is one of the best hotel breakfasts we have ever had anywhere.
