Looks like we are going on the same dates 👍

I hoping someone can advise me - we are hoping to buy economy seats, and then use miles to upgrade to PE.

Is it best for us to book the economy seats as soon as we see a price that we like, and then hope to upgrade later, or should we try and call and book directly with Virgin and get it all done in one transaction?

Our return date will be released in 2 days by BA and so far the prices have remained static - £1833 for 2 of us PE from Gatwick.
Our dates aren't out at all yet for VA (which would be our first choice from Manchester) but the prices earlier in September are £1805 PE using some miles + money, and of course no seat booking fees with VA and 3 hours less drive.
Going to hang on for VA releasing dates in ?November.
I think we paid around £1600 for this year so not 'too' much increase if it holds.
Economy using the same are BA £981 and VA £1,003.

We are going 27/09/2020 to 15/10/2020 and the BA flights are available in a few days time, Virgin is still about a month away. We prefer flying with one of those two airlines, if possible. We usually book pretty soon after they become available but, a couple of years ago we booked with BA, paid a small deposit per person, then cancelled and re-booked as they became cheaper and it was worth losing the deposit as the saving was larger.

We're a couple of days later and will do the same, 29th to the 17th. Prices look good to me unless Virgin are drastically cheaper.
