While I understand your point it isn't the issue at hand. I had a contract with the crematorium for the funeral of my mother. That took place and the contract was complete. At no stage did I knowingly give them permission to send me marketing information. If they have hidden that within the contract then its not valid as it has to be informed consent.

Its a matter of law. They are not legally entitled to send me marketing. Trying to upsell after the event. It angers me that they have done so, that they want to make a greater profit from the death of my mother. What next a two for one deal!

I find your response to me quite upsetting.

It wasn't meant to upset. However I stand by what I wrote. I am angry that they feel they can send marketing and upselling leaflets to me when I have not given them permisson to do so.

We all approach these things in different ways. Yours is clearly different to mine. Nothing wrong with that but I reserve my right to approach mine in the way that get me through it.

I received the same shortly after Mum and Dad died. To be honest, I can’t say it bothered me. I already had the plaque ordered for our local cemetery and I’m not into commemorative jewellery so I had a look and threw it away. That said, it was before the days of GDPR so the rules were probably very different.

They are indeed very different. Back then they could send you anything they wanted until you said stop. At that point they had to stop. Now its completely the opposite.

My brother showed us a brochure of things and we all said No. my mum was a no nonsense kind of person and would hate us wearing jewellery with her ashes. It didn’t bother me, when someone dies it’s terrible and we all deal with it differently. So sorry for your loss xxx

I had exactly the same when my Mum died and was cremated three years ago (before all the DP stuff). May be it's a new thing that a lot of crematoriums are now doing?

To be honest, it didn't bother me, I just threw it straight in the bin, but I completely understand how you feel about the insensitivity of doing this.

I make no comment about people who choose to do such things at all. Different people need different things to get them through and have their memories.

However what I am seething at is getting the letter in the first place. I did not give them permission to contact me. I feel I have receive a spam mailing from a crematorium trying to upsell me. They have used my details to try to sell me things. I imagine they do that with every next of kin identified. I just feel its plain wrong. I had to give them my demographic details to go ahead with the funeral. I feel they have no right to use that to then try to upsell their services at a later time.

The law changed last year with the new Data Protection Act based on GDPR. Nowadays its not a case of you have to opt out of this type of contact instead you have to opt in. Without opt in they have no right to send me junk mail. If there needed to be contact due to say collecting the ashes then that would be different but it isn't the case. The ashes were collected from the Funeral Director already.

I detest junk mail with a vengance at the best of times but this just really gets to me. In many respects they are playing on emotions. You are not doing the best for your deceased relative unless you buy this extra thing etc.

I have sent them an email which explains just how much I don't appreciate their letter and brochures and that I will be taking my concerns to the ICO. It may be an over the top reaction but their actions anger me.
I completely understand your reaction to this mail because I had a similar feeling when my mum died (pre GDPR it must be said)

At the time the mail came through it was barely a month since my mums service but I was still feeling raw but I felt like it was a gross invation of my privacy. Others tried to tell me it's the nature of their business but I still wasnt impressed !

I suggest you simply call them and politely ask them the question.

When my papa died in hospital. The nurses came in straight away and left a leaflet at the end of the bed for a funeral parlour. I thought that was well out of order when he had literally been minutes dead and was still lying there.
