follow on: hayfever jab
my dd1 suffers with severe hayfever and has to have regular checks with the gp nurse through the spring summer months, she had medication she has to take daily, she has suffered since she was 2
(apparently you are immune till then) they said they would give her the jab for her exam years and as this year is her gcse when should she have it? and is it worth it and does it work? any advise much appreciated.

they're usually given kenalog or depo medrone (can google it) alot of gp's are reluctant to give it as they say over the counter meds are just as good now. but at our GP practice the Dr still lets the people who have had it every year have it .some patients have tried over the counter preps but say the jab is the only thing that works for them they usually come in for it at the beginning of hayfever season which will be what ever your daughters triggers are for some its pollen others birch trees in springtime etc.
hope that helps |

My surgery wont give it as they say it's a very strong steroid. But thanks for the heads up, we all suffer and dd15 will be taking her GCSEs in June, hadnt given that any thought... Will check with the surgery again. Is it available elsewhere? How much does it cost? And most importantly, does it work?

My GP refuses to give it to me even though I suffer very badly with allergies and hayfever. I first had the injection when I lived in Luton for a year in 2000 and was suffering very badly. I had to have the full 2 doses for it to work and it worked brilliantly but now I'm back at home in Bristol, my GP refuses to give it and so I am back to suffering again. The strongest tablets available on prescription don't even work for more than a couple of hours and they are only able to be taken once a day which is pretty useless for me. I ask every time I go but he still refuses
He has recently given me another new tablet to try (not sure if these work yet as I need to try and hold off as long as possible and wait for a 'really bad day' to see if they really work!) and some nasal drops, which are a steroid and they seem to be working at the moment... but it's not full hayfever season yet so we will see! |

My son 14 has suffered from severe Hayfever since he was 7, it is the tree pollen and his bad months are mid feb to mid may. We moved here to switzerland 3 years ago and the season after we arrived was so bad I had to take him to the dr. I was recommended an allergy specialist who took one look at him and recommended trying to desensitise him.He started taking drops everyday in the december and I was a bit dubious it would work by feb but they were a miracle as we only became aware that the season had started because a friends child suffers the same and was very ill.His 3 month suffering was reduced to 3 weeks and as he has started taking the drops earlier this year us and the dr are confident it should be reduced even further. Would highly recommend this coursse for anyone who suffers badly. Hilaryx

Hi,
Both my children suffer with hayfever, especially my daughter. She has had it since she was 3 (now 9), nothing has worked, she would take tablets and eye drops but would still really suffer badly. Last year in Superdrug they will selling allergy relievers which work through light therapy. 2 prongs go into your nose. It has helped so much that she didn't need her eye drops anymore, she still had tablets but the symptoms were so much milder. I think it was about £20 (half price). I can't recommend it enough. xx |

its a horrible thing, she will come home from school having sat inside all lunch time (as her friends go on the field and eat lunch) when home she lies on her bed in the dark
it really is sole destroying.
