Is my tumble dryer dead?

Smells like a bonfire, drum doesn’t turn. To me that indicates it’s died, whereas mum has suggested getting someone out to have a look and see if it just needs a new belt?

Are they usually worth replacing? Or do I need to break the news to my dad that not only has my car broken (which he’s fixing ❤️) but my tumble dryer has gone to heaven.

Unfortunately life without one doesn’t work in our house, far too much uniform being worn - and we only have 1 supply of uniform.

It depends how old it is and whether it's a good/expensive model. We only buy cheap vented tumble driers for around £200 and replace them when they start playing up, but we use them almost daily and get a good few years life out of them.

OP. I agree with DR JJ. If you identify the part and then go on to E Spares they have videos for nearly every model showing you how to make the change.

However they aren't the cheapest so hunt around for the part you need before buying.

It’s a cheap condenser one. I got it in a sale for £140 3.5 years ago.

If you call someone out to replace the belt (assuming it's the belt and not the motor) with parts and labour then I would likely just buy a brand new one. As mentioned you can take check if it is the belt and replace it yourself if you are confident doing these type of DIY jobs (not everyone is).

Thanks MH. I’ll speak to OH, he might be happy to have a go. My dad is a electrician but he doesn’t usually touch appliances, though that could be customers only. I’m sure he’d have a go at mine if OH can’t!

If you do take the back off, its a good idea to hoover all the lint from the heater matrix at the same time. Ours sometimes trips a small fuse if we overload it, its quick to reset but we always clean the heater at the same time.

I got my fixing instructions from a aussie forum called whirlpool. It had loads of techie stuff on it.

So it’s cost you 9 p a day . Call out and parts ? Is it worth it, debatable.
