Our beloved English language...
Am I alone in finding people who start a reply to a question with the word 'So'... irritating?

Absolutely SF, another one that gets me is when asked a question the reply starts with errr emmm hmm and continues through the answer. If you don't know say so and do not try to fudge it.

Indeed LB don’t waffle, if you don’t know then say so. I think it’s crept in to enable people to construct a response as they are talking... a way of buying time...

No - it irritates me too! It’s totally redundant unless it is a material part of the reply eg. “Why do they do x” ...”so that someone can else can do y”. - hope I’ve explained that well.
You’ve opened the door for me to have a grumble about my own pet hate with misuse of language now. Thanks OP and sorry everyone else ! (I can almost hear my DH groaning!) I absolutely hate people using “of” where they should use “have” - by that I mean “could of” , “should of”, etc. instead of “could have” and “should have”. E.g “I could have felt better by now but I should have taken my medicine properly and I didn’t do that”. ...and don’t get me started on apostrophes in plurals. I’m glad to see that I am not the only one who cares about proper use of language.

Affect and effect seem to have become interchangeable these days, and yes to have and of.
