Anyone know if any blackout dates with these and if so when, also how much to upgrade to include volcano bay

The "$5 upgrade" is when you upgrade a 14 day Explorer ticket to the 2-Park Seasonal Pass.

As per Universal's webpage, the block-out dates for Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure for this Seasonal Pass are:

Dec 21-31, 2017
Jan. 1-3, 2018
Mar. 23-31, 2018
Apr. 1-7, 2018
Jul. 1-31, 2018
Dec. 22-31, 2018

(i.e. you can't visit the main parks around Christmas, Easter and during the whole of July)

To upgrade this 2-Park Seasonal Pass to the 3-Park Seasonal pass which adds Volcano Bay it costs another $100 (+tax). Volcano Bay block-out dates are July 1-31 2018.

Oh no, going in Feb then July, flying home 4th Aug so may just buy 2wks for July as d's not coming feb n wants to do volcano bay in July, don't think it's worth extra 105 each just for a couple of days in Feb then only do universal for 3 days beginning Aug

You could upgrade to the 2-Park Power Pass instead? That only has block-out dates at Christmas and Easter and so you could use that in July as well as in Feb. Plus parking at Universal is half price with the Power Pass.

To upgrade to the 2-Park Power Pass would cost around $65 per person.

Adding Volcano Bay would cost another $100 on top of that (so $165 in total).

See above for the Power Pass - which does have block-out dates in Dec/Jan and Mar/Apr. But not in July.

To have no block-out dates at all you'd need to upgrade to the 2-Park Preferred Pass. That costs around $100 (+tax). It's then another $100 if you want to add Volcano Bay (so, around $200 in total).

You also get free parking with the Preferred Pass plus discounts on merchandise and all restaurants.
