Just take a book or something? I'm not sure what tips or tricks you're looking for, it's the same as eating with a group but you'll be alone.

I play with my phone after placing the order until my food arrives. I tend to chat with the waiters too, they are usually super nice and friendly, and more than happy to engage.

I've done Disney solo several times including going for signature dining and character dining on my trips.

I always have my iPhone with me, so just read a book, or surf the internet, read Disney blogs, browse the Dibb. Sometimes talk to the CMs and very occasionally talk to other guests.

For buffet meals - I make sure I carry my wallet and valuables along with me whenever I make a trip to the buffet.

Character meals - either selfie, or ask other guests or passing CMs to help take photos. Still fun - at Garden Grill I had great character interaction while dining solo and it was one of the more fun meals I've had.

Anyway, no issues with dining solo at all for me!

If you're nervous about dining solo - you could perhaps try going out to a local restaurant and seeing if it's something you're comfortable with?

Funnier if you pretend to have a long and intense phone conversation with Trump. This would work particularly well if you ordered a burger.
