Strong bread flour
I haven't been able to get bread flour only plain or self-raising. Does anyone have a recipe for bread which doesn't require bread flour please? is there such a thing?

You can make Soda Bread is you have bicarbonate of soda! I also made flat breads the other day with plain flour, they turned out really well!

It also depends on the protein content. Strong bread flour is over 12% but many plain flour is also around 12%. Some supermarket plain flour is actually Cake flour and is around 8 or 9 %.
So check the packet to see what you have. Really anything above 11% will make great bread. |

Oh that is good to know, we are new at this bread making fun.
We used plain flour as it was all we could get at the time and it is only 7%. We will try again with a bigger % Thank you

We managed to get bread flour from our local town artisan bread shop. They sell it loose plus fresh yeast. Might be worth looking for a similar independent shop.

yeah, we've been getting ours from an italian deli down the road along with 00 flour (great for pizza/pasta)
as long as its not a gluten free flour (like gram flour which is made from chickpeas) it should be ok for bread, but you may have to adjust the hydration of the recipe. but if youre new to it, try to stick to the recipe youre using, at least the first time... afterwards, start experimenting. i've recently been attempting pizza dough with stuff that wasnt right (see aforementioned gram flour) and it gave things a really weird texture. fortunately, i got some proper (plain rather than SBF) flour and it comes out much better, but needs a little less water that what i usually use. |

I want bread flour too. I read that it might be available from local bakers shops so I am going to ring one tomorrow.
