We paid £170 this year with Aviva for 3 bed detached bungalow up slightly from last year. We add accidental damage plus legal protection, low excess but we don’t really have expensive jewellery etc so don’t cover out with the home. I always compare the market but this year most firms were wanting £250 to £300 for the same cover or less so stuck with Aviva.

Never undervalue your property or valuables, many years ago I was working on a property that was hit by lightning and caused over £20000 worth of damage he was only payed out £8500 because he undervalued his contents and his property. This was over 15 years ago so increase those prices with inflation.

No good having a £2k limit if 3 of the traditional rings Ladies wear are worth £3k plus.

They can and do refuse to cover losses if you are under insured

I pay £519 per annum via M & S for buildings and contents with unlimited cover, accidental damage, new for old and legal expenses. Plus the add on of enhanced all risks. The latter is what bumped it up.
Tom we always disclose individual items over £1000 normally this includes a watch that would cost over £4500 to replace, rings over £1000. Our tv cost over £1400.
Some other good advice is take photos with a digital camera on a memory card of all your possessions and give it to a family member in case you need to make a claim. Some insurance companies want proof that you owned the item. Some want receipts but that isn’t feasible all the time.

Think we pay about £230 for unlimited buildings £80,000 contents plus specified and other items outside the house. Can’t remember what the excesses are but I think small.

Was with Aviva until a couple of years ago when their cost went from around what I’m paying to £350. They weren’t willing to lower the price when I phoned so I left
