Weighing and paying on planes.

As this issue popped up in the news again, I read through a few links and have changed my opinion.

I used to be against.

A quick Google will show up how pilots calculate fuel and weight ratios. So much for men, women and children. One big mistake was a flight of burly millatry guys who bent the average so far the plane crashed hard, and that's not alone.

While I don't think charging more is fair, good weight distribution makes sense.

Thoughts?

Highly emotive subject but I am sure Pilots have a ready reckoner.

I suspect airlines in the Pacific catchment area have a different set of rules

it is an emotive subject and I am against it.

If done by weight alone - why should someone genetically tall pay more than someone genetically shorter. (I have 2 daughters - the size 4 5'10 tall one weighs more than the size 8 5'4 one)

A plane carries a whole lot more than just passengers too. Miscalculating the odd passenger that doesnt fit into the "average" isnt going to be the reason for a plane crash.

On a Florida flight I bet there are a lot more under average weights than over.

This was my view too, until you look over air crash reports.

I am overweight myself and had to be weighed for a Cesna flight to the Uranium mines in Australia and it was a little embarrassing!

I make no excuses for my weight and know its my issue to lose it, but I can see it opening a whole new can of 'human rights' worms.

Some of the biggest people I have ever seen in my life were on an Ethiopian
airlines flight.
And I have flown over 500 hundred times.
Its a very difficult subject to address but if it gets to the stage when other people are endangered it has to be looked into.

I think weighing people with their luggage is the way forward, although maybe by booking group or family rather than individuals to average things out a bit. An excess baggage charge for each kg over seems fair. As a family of 4 we fly with a combined weight of 32kg hand luggage and don't check in 23kg each which offsets the size of my backside in my mind (and no, it doesn't quite weigh 92kg! )
