Actually, I've not heard anyone say that they can't play any of the other DivX files that I've uploaded elsewhere - so maybe it's more common to have these MPEG4 type codecs installed than we assume?

Maybe you're right Andre (you usually are) but even if you are I am, as yet, still not convinced that encoding in DivX because it produces much bigger files and it's unable to stream... or am I wrong?

But, having said that, I am willing to be convinced and educated because there just has to be something better than WMV! I also accept that the quality in DivX can be better than straight WMV but is it really worth it because the difference is only marginal... isn't it?

Put it this way, I know that if I'd shot all of my material for my montage on a MiniDV camcorder and exported it to 320x240 with a bit rate of 500kpbs like you and Andy probably have done with your videos then mine too will have been of a comparable quality even if mine was encoded with Windows Media Encoder. So what extra, then, would DivX bring to the party?

I'm really not trying to get into a punch up about this or trying to be confrontational... I'm just questioning the value of DivX over straight WMV encoding.

Please make me see the light!

Nowt wrong with a healthy debate, as long as everyone agree's that I am right at the end of it.

This is what I posted in the other thread after playing for the day:

DivX/Mp3 version.
andyjpartridge/dd_divx.avi
25Mb: Better quality, doesn't play as it downloads though.

andyjpartridge/dd_512k.wmv
9Mb: Not as good quality, plays as it downloads, smaller file size.

I guess until I get the DivX down to the size of the WMV, it's not comparing apples'n'apples is it?

*heads off to the DivX control panel to get it to 9mb*
