Question Changing Settings

I have the Dimage G600 and looking at the menu you can change the sharpness and saturation before taking the photo. I was wondering if there would be any time when it would be an advantage to use these?

I always find changing the saturation can be a matter of taste, more vivid colours may work on those horrible grey days when all your pictures come out looking a little flat or like mud. Sometimes upping the saturation may look good the first few times you do it but eventually your eyes start telling you something is not right with the photo...

I personally tend to to leave sharpness well alone, all it actually does is add noise and fool the eye into thinking thats sharper, usually at the expense of detail..

Back to the saturation.. Take some portraits under the same conditions outside and inside.. For every picture keep changing the saturation.. Have a look at them on your monitor..Look at the flesh, which looks real or which do you prefer (bear in mind people are not suppose to be glowing orange though most tvs setups in homes would probably have you believe otherwise )

Finally try a couple of alternatives to using the camera.. Picasa 2 is a free very basic editor from the google people that will allow you to fix and change things easily with one button and its a great little organisor as well.. Or try Demos from Corel Paint Shop Pro Photoshop IX which is quite easy to use.. Its always better to work on the photo afterwards on your PC..

Thanks Danny, up till now I haven't used them and so I don't think I will bother. I am using Photoshop Elements 4 and have Paint Shop X but I am always looking to see if I can do good photos without them.

I got my tripod today, although it isn't really a tripod its more of a stick which I am going to try and use for the fireworks.

Just realised I put IX instead of XI but to be honest there isnt that much to get excited about between X and XI.. A combination of X and elements is an excellent way to go..

The Stick tripods are quite excellent.. You can get a lot of support from these with a quick rapid setup.. Learn how to balance your weight and use your two legs to form the rest of the tripod...

One thought about changing settings on camera's...

... remembering to put them back.

I have a couple of photo sets that were ruinned because I forgot to change from Night to Day mode, for example!

Yep, me too. I took several outdoor shots with the white balance set to manual indoor mode once. Got some very blue people! I managed to resuce them a bit in Photoshop, but it wasn't anywhere near as easy as I thought it would be (I was expecting to just use a reverse filter - or just change a colour temperature setting somewhere). This is still rather too cold, but it's a lot better than it was before (if only I'd been shooting in RAW mode I'd have been OK of course):

I've also occasionally fogotten to switch the ISO back down to normal settings after shooting inside a ride at 1600 ISO.
