I am so sorry to hear this, virgin were fantastic with us my mum (who was not travelling) was too ill to leave alone virgin refunded every penny of our non refundable flights 4 weeks before we were meant to fly

In these circumstances sometimes booking direct with the airline rather than a third party gets a better result. American are particularly good (even when it’s BA flights using AA code share booked with AA)

Delta refunded us in full for 3 non-refundable flights wen my SIL was diagnosed with terminal cancer even though she was not travelling with us. Try Virgin and see what they say as you may find them very amenable.
