No you don't have to tell Avis (or any car hire company) anything.
The VTP (assuming you're into MCO) consists of a bar code on a tag that you hang from your rear mirror and is read as you leave either garage at MCO. The technology (which is beyond this simple 75 year old) will supersede the camera which takes photos of your plate. You won't be double charged believe me. All explained in my earlier links - both VTP and how Sunpass works. Mick

As you know Bonny Lass our hire car is on automatic pilot out of garage B at MCO on it's way to Highgate Park and we often pay cash on the three tolls we encounter on the airport trips but the VTP is really a no-brainer as it's (or was ) completely admin free and some of the tolls are less that the cash price. The exit plaza off 417 to the Osceola for example was only 54 cents and the cash price is a dollar.
Joan and I really rooting for you to get to Bokeelia in the autumn. We've lost three trips but reasonably confidant that we'll be having Thanksgiving dinner there later. Take care Mick x

PS
I shouldn't say this myself as I've edited and added to it a bit over the years but there's an excellent DIBB guide to driving on here if you want me to link it. All DIBB guides are prepared, edited and expanded by members so I like to keep things in the DIBB family if I can. If it's your first time driving might be worth a read. In 37/38 trips we've not spent a single night in a WDW hotel nor have we been to a park since 2010 so can't help on that stuff but I've hired a car every time and driven over 50,000 miles so the car threads are one of the ones I enjoy reading and contributing to. Just one quick question. Who have you hired Avis through? If it's a fly-drive with BA then no problem it will be fully insured. If not please check that you have CDW with no excess and, more importantly, SLI (aka EP) for $1m. Mick

If I can add another question, if returning from TPA rather than MCO, is there an alternative drop off option for the visitor pass either at TPA or somewhere near WDW.
