I totally agree 👍. Don't normally enjoy Radio 2 at the weekend but have thought that the music played along with the tributes read out has been exceptional and imho reflected how the majority of the UK feel at this sad time.
I appreciate that it might not be everyone's cup of tea but there are other alternatives you can listen to eg CD's, Spotify and other streaming services.

Well as the BBC 10 o'clock news featured a bit of me sharing my views on the Princes death I found it wholly appropriate.
Also on PM on radio 4, if your interested. |

My DD works for the BBC and it’s protocol and part of the royal charter to cancel other shows and have a period of mourning. There is not to be any comedy output and will likely last til after the funeral 😢

It would seem a lot of people were disgruntled, I was surprised to read online that the BBC was flooded with complaints about excessive coverage/removing scheduled TV. ITV figures apparently show a 60% drop in last weeks viewers which is also coverage attributed. The BBC later put a dedicated form on its website to allow viewers to complain about TV coverage.
Sister rang and told us about 12.50pm, watched BBC 1 for 10 or 15 mins afore turning off, our first BBC 1 program since Friday was Line of Duty tonight at 9pm. We accepted it'd be wall to wall but until reading online news and this thread were unaware just how heavy it had become for so many - we don't watch any soap or XYZ Factor et al., so initially had no idea schedules had been scrapped, apparently a friend advised some buying channel, QVC was also closed. When we put the TV back on we watched iPlayer or Freeview, we've seen nowt from channels 1 thro 5 this weekend.

Would be interesting to know what the actual protocol was and who it would be for. I would suspect its for the position and not the popularity of the person in that position.
The cancelled comedy programs for Friday including Have I got new and Graham Norton are on in the next couple of days. I know we had this type of thing with Diana, can't remember about Queen Mother. Certainly don't remember the BBC basically only having a single channel which was duplicated. The commercial channels can of course do what they wish. On the Queens death this will be happening again but I wonder about the like of any of her children with the exception of Charles. It is what is is but it must be written down somewhere. |

I wonder how many dibbers don’t have anything beyond the standard channels to watch. Posts seem to indicate both YouTube and Netflix are very popular.

I don’t know if you can read the royal charter anywhere online it’s agreed every 10 years (edited as I checked online)
Seems there is a category A which includes the Queen and Prince Philip, Charles and Camilla and William and Kate. In the event of a Category A death, there are particular processes and procedures that have already been planned for by the Royal Family, the Government and the BBC. The period of mourning could be for 2 to 7 days. The news dept have a wardrobe of blacks backstage for when there is an announcement, all staff change into black clothing. Certainly her dept, which includes a lot of comedy, have suspended content for now. She’s on paperwork for the next few days anyway. Don’t know if radio is different as BBC radio 1s announcement was quite eh, surreal?

Thats why I wonder how it is judged what the public want. I can see, within my family, a difference as to how much is enough coverage. I am sure there are ways of assessing what we want. There are large swathes that want lots and large swathes that want none.
I'm guessing the BBC will have a review after an appropriate time and revamp the policy! The other terrestrial will all want to rethink too! |
