7.10pm tonight, BBC 2, Florida: America's Animal Paradise
I make no secret of being a Fl wildlife follower, hence...
Documentary exploring the wildlife of the US state, including footage of manatees, baby alligators and miniature deer living in Florida's pine forests, coral reefs and famous Everglades wetlands. The programme considers the dangers facing the animal population, including natural disasters like wildfires, flooding and hurricanes, as well as the pressure of a growing human presence in their territory. It should also be available on iPlayer for those wanting to catch up.

So shocking how many non native creatures now dominate the everglades etc, the number of burmese pythons was staggering!

Hi Lou - the python issue is very serious and whilst the State have python hunting in the early part of the year, due to the amount of eggs/young a female python can produce [20-100 depending on python size], the seriousness of the issue continues.
'The state pays registered hunters a minimum wage hourly rate for up to 10 hours of work a day, plus a bonus for the catch: $50 for each python measuring up to 4 feet plus $25 more for each foot measured above four feet. An additional $200 is paid for a nesting female'. The toxic cane toad is another invasive species giving cause for concern, Fl's wildlife commission encourages residents to kill cane toads whenever possible. A permit isnt required to keep as personal pets, altho why anybody would want a toxic cane toad as a 'pet' I find quite baffling.
