Puppy has parvovirus UPDATE POST #67

We are due to bring home our new puppy next week ,we’ve received a text last night from the breeder to say he and all his siblings have been tested positive for parvovirus.we are heartbroken :.the breeder has asked if we want deposit back . What on Earth do we do ? I read up on it late into the night , it’s not good . Has anyone any experience of this ? Puppy is from the West Midlands

This sounds very cold but yes get your deposit back, sadly your puppy may not make it. Parvo is often lethal.

I’m so sorry for the litter and for you.

I saw this on your other thread. 😢.

It will take a lot of luck for the puppies to survive. I would be concerned about the breeder, as this is readily avoided by vaccination and keeping up with annual boosters for the adult dogs. Even the puppies should have had their first jabs by now.

I would get your deposit back regardless and when you are ready find a different breeder.

I’m so sorry this has happened and those little pups but I agree with the other posters. It’s often not a good outcome. This is why it’s so important to keep up with vaccinations.

I am very sorry. I can’t get my dogs annual boosters done still, were due July, got an appointment finally yesterday for 29th Oct.
I do believe they were prioritising new pups though.
I too would get my deposit back.
Working cockers aren’t usually the prey of puppy farmers, but maybe just inexperienced breeders trying to make a buck out of Covid.
How much was the pup?

He’s £1500 . The deposit was only £100 .Apparently one of his parents has it . It’s mom,dad,4 puppies and another cocker who live in the same house

Oh wow, I hadn’t thought there could be a problem with appointments. I got a letter regarding my cats annual booster yesterday and assumed I would easily be able to get him in. I will be calling this morning when they are open.

Oh crikey that’s a big wait! I got my dogs boosters done when the RCVS lifted the restrictions on emergency only. I only waited a week or so. The vet just came out to my car had a chat then took him in.
OP I know you must be really upset. When we had seen our spaniels at about 5 weeks they almost felt like our already. I hope they are all ok.

I just asked my daughter (vet student) what she thought and she said that even if the puppy pulls through, it can go on to develop gastrointestinal issues later in its life due to the parvovirus so that should be taken into consideration. She was surprised that the adult dogs around the puppies hadn’t been vaccinated as puppies are incredibly susceptible to parvo.
As hard as it is, because you have probably become emotionally attached, as I would have, I would probably take the refund.
You could be in for a whole load of worry, stress and large vets bills further down the line if the dog does go on to develop tummy issues.
