Who remembers this sight...

Who remembers the bin men collecting in this style?

No ash from your fires allowed in the bins either!

You always made sure these gents received a decent Christmas box too!

this was a time when they'd collect your bin from your back garden too, the bin would slowly dent over time at it was hit against the bin wagon on emptying

Yes, I remember them well. Thing was we didn't have anything like the amount of rubbish that we have now. Nothing wrapped in plastic. We had an open fire and burned what little rubbish there was. Dustbin was mostly for tins, a separate bin for ashes.

I remember them.
We had one of those bins for a family of 11.
I think me and my husband wouldn’t cope with a bin that size today, just for the 2 of us never mind a family of 11.
The only time I can really remember extra rubbish being left out would have been Christmas,so it’s made me think how on earth we managed.
I also remember the coalmen, but living in a pit village we all had coal fires.
Lovely memories!

I remember too. I can remember my mum saying “I must unlock the back gate for the bin men”.

I remember the bin men very well, bins had to be brought from the side of the house and out to the cart, of course dustmen carried them out. Money was very tight when I was a kid but my Mum always gave the Dustman, the milkman and the postman a christmas drink.
