Ah, fun times!

I had a ZX81 and wanted a TV so I could programme in my bedroom. My mum and dad bought me a 2nd hand TV.
I wanted one of those sleek Sony Monitor looking ones, I got an ITT KB250. It was enormous, valve driven with two tuners, a 625 line and the old 405 line.

Haha Pong was the first game that DS coded - I think he was in 1st year at secondary school. He wanted to go into games development, until he discovered pen testing.

You were lucky, back then TVs were so expensive if you bought one it was often only a portable, otherwise it was off to Rumbelows, Radio Rentals etc.

Later I had a job in Boots selling TVs and HiFis and the like, this would have been late 80s when I was doing A Levels. Every time we sold a TV we had to demand ID, and fill in a form informing TV licensing that this person had bought a television.

Same when you hired one. When I went to university we hired TVs and never of course voluntarily paid the TV license. One day there was a knock on the door, I was about to answer when heard a radio. I thought who is this ? Looked through the window and there he was, TV licensing man. Didn’t answer obviously and we had a whip around and went to the Post Office and bought one straight away.

Year after I was in another house, same story, came around again, fortunately this was a week before end of term, so when he had gone we picked up the TV and took it to a mates house a few doors down and left it there before returning it to Rumbelows.

I think I had a SNES by this point.

We move to the states in 1979 and dad bought us an Atari not long after. We thought it was amazing! Later my brother had a Nintendo but I was never as mothered with that. I’d moved onto a Commodore 64 and trying a bit of programming. I do have fond memories of the Atari though.

I had a C 64 too after the Spectrum. Was much more powerful.
Where did you live in States?
