You can't go to the South rim by helicopter, it is too far. That is the smaller West rim.

I've done Driving to South Rim and Back in a day, Driving there and Staying over night (twice) and a one day coach trip.
I would not recommend driving there and back in a day if you are the only driver in your party. Staying overnight and getting up for sunrise is possibly the greatest experience ever. It was mighty cold, but so worth it. |
