We always request that DW takes her chair to the aircraft door and it is returned there upon landing. I make it safe in the presence of the ground crew and always take on board the foot rests and control unit. I used to take the cushion off but her current one is fixed with velcro with the added security of bungee cords.
I fix to it laminated labels showing the dimensions and weight, and instructions not to remove the batteries, fold it or place anything on it.

Everything that is removable we take off ds's wheelchair , learnt our lesson there years ago, also ds needs to sit on his pressure cushion.

we fly TUI and the crew have always been really helpful carrying the bits from this wheelchair.

we wont be able to keep using TUI when they start flying to Melbourne so we are hoping virgin are just as good

We've never encountered any problems with Virgin. More often than not, without me asking, the onboard manager will make sure the ground crew bring her chair from the hold directly to the door.

Regards
