Has anyone driven from San Francisco to Los Angeles?

... via Las Vegas?

I'm looking at alternatives to a Florida road trip. We can't get a month off next year and I'm wondering if something different might work out better.

However, the price of car hire is RIDICULOUS at approx £2k with a BA Fly Drive (I've looked at Kayak etc, and it's looking like £1.8k from there too, for something decent sized, my boys are both 6ft so we can't have a VW Golf!)

If anyone has done anything similar and has any hints or tips, I'd be grateful to hear them.

TIA 💐

The best road trip we have ever done (and have done it twice) is
Denver
Estes’s Park
Glen wood Springs
Grand Junction
Monument Valley
Moab for Arches National Park and canyon lands national, park
Vegas
LA

We have also gone to Vale and Aspen enroute. Most of the hotels are much cheaper than California.

A month is a long time for a SF to LA trip could do
SF
Yosemite
Then down PCH to LA
Then either San Diego and Palm Springs

Or
SF yosemite
Tahoe
Vegas
LA
Then PCH
And fly back for SFO

We have driven the PCH many times, it’s utterly beautiful…but you need to do it in a convertible!

We have done SF to LA twice now. Last week being the latest.
We usually stop overnight in Monterey and then Morro Bay.
The scenery is breathtaking.

If you have tall boys then a convertible isn't for you. Not enough room in the back for those long legs. Lol.
It would only take a couple of days to drive, 3 at the most and we usually drive right down to San Diego.

We did a California Road trip about 3 years ago and absolutely loved it. We booked it as I got some bargain flights with BA but blooming heck, hotels were sooo expensive. We stayed just outside of some of the main stopping points to try and keep the price down a bit but this was our route (opposite to what you're suggesting but you could just something similar in reverse):

Flew into LAX
2 nights Long Beach (AirBNB)
1 night Carpinteria (Best Western)
2 nights Pismo Beach (Shell Beach Inn)
2 nights Pacific Grove (Best Western)
4 nights San Fransisco (Cow Hollow Inn)
1 night Jamestown (Jamestown Inn)
1 night Bishop
5 nights Las Vegas (New York New York)
3 nights LA (AirBNB)
1 night Redondo Beach (Marriott I think)

It was such a brilliant trip, the only thing I would change is fewer 1 night stays but there's so much to see!

Don't miss Yosemite NP. But even more beautiful is Tioga Pass across the park.

We flew into Vegas then went to SF via Death Valley, Tioga pass and Yosemite. Then drove down the PCH to LA. We were told it is best to do north to south so you are on the sea side of the road. I did a trip pie which I will try to find and link for you, however it was 2013 so not sure how out of date it will be! https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho...d.php?t=712040

Should be able to find rest from this, it was titled Hi Sierras!

It is a great road trip and we are looking to do it again someday.

We did LV first as worked out cheaper flights than any other way. Car hire price we paid is probably irrelevant now!

Did SF to Yosemite to Death Valley to Las Vegas to LA and then onto San Diego. Drove back to LA for flight home. Loved it. Quite a bit of driving but treat it as part of the holiday. Did a lot of the usual tourist sites. In LA we stayed just along road from Disneyland and spent most of time there. Didn’t see much of LA and would like to do that.
