Question for the folks that have been - I love the films (Laputa was the first one I saw, one rainy Xmas night on Granada TV, many years ago now...) but what is actually in the museum?

As they do not allow photos inside I have no real idea of what they have there, and do they have a gift shop there?

Just bumping up my question of "what is inside" please.

I quite fancy going to this, my other half has no interest, and think that the merch shops in the few stores around Tokyo might suffice me.

However, can someone explain what is inside?

I loved the films, quite fancy it, but not describing myself as a huge fan that no matter what it has inside, would love.

Hi Antony - sorry I did not see this before.

The museum contains several different exhibits related to Studio Ghibli films. Some of these are permanent and some are rotating. There is an exhibit devoted to animation on the ground floor with several amazing mechanical exhibits. There is also a special animation that is shown only at the museum in a theatre on the ground floor. We really enjoyed this!

Whilst we were there there was a exhibit based on food in Ghibli films. There were also some reproductions of some of the film settings. There's original artwork (and lots of copies too) plus exhibits that chart some of the journeys of the characters and the inspirations for them. There's also the big soft cat bus structure which children can play on - sadly for me, you must be under 12 to play! On the roof terrace there is an impressive robot soldier structure.

Much of the magic is in the theming of the whole place though. It is difficult to convey. I would say that if you love the films it is worth a visit as it very unique and very interesting to see some of the exhibits detailing the background to the stories.

Many thanks for the reply - things to consider and decide.

As good as your description is, and it really was helpful, am not sure it is a place I want to go.

Is the main route to go to the kichijoji ir Mutaka stations and get the bus (or walk) across the park? Or is there an alternate way of getting there?

You can do either. We got off at Kichijo-ji station and walked across the InoKashira park - it's a pretty park and there is a small Benzaiten shrine which you can visit (as well as a small zoo, boats on the lake etc). We walked back from the musuem to Mitaka station. I believe that there is also a direct bus between Mitaka and the museum, but we did not use it.

More about our day is here: https://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/sho...5#post13464875 (I will crack on with this report soon - more is written, just haven't sorted the pictures to go with it!)

This is on our tokyo trip. I already have the calendar entry to get me up just after midnight 10th April... As for getting there, the main website says it the best:

ghibli-museum.jp/en/howtogo/

Train to Mitaka, take the bus outside the south exit. We intend walking back through the park depending on feet.
