Unfortunately, we didn’t use the metro ourselves as we visited Hollywood on a Sunday, so I couldn’t comment on how safe it felt.

However, if you are staying there on a Sunday, I would suggest you do drive, as we did. Our Day 4 Trip Report may help to give you an idea of what we did on that day.

We also got some really helpful information from a couple of trip reports by mike1d - "Suitcase and a Dream” - and Jocat's "Wandering Around the West Coast" report, who both visited the Warner Bros tour.

Getting to Santa Monica was only a short drive, and we found that you could park at the garage at Santa Monica Place shopping centre for free for the first 90 minutes. Alternatively, there was a bus that ran to Santa Monica from Marina del Rey.
