Currency Card

19 year old DS2 is off to Texas next month to be a camp counsellor. I was thinking that a currency card would be a safe way to take his cash and avoid bank charges. Please can you tell me if I have the right idea and, if so, which card do you suggest.

Thank you.

We have used FairFX cards (USD AND EU) for trips when the kids have been with us and also when the older ones have been on their own. I like the fact you can have a master card and transfer funds to and from other family cards instantly.

Highly recommended by us.

Starling would be good. It's a bank, with a debit card but no charges for using abroad.

He is only there just over 3 months. Is it worth opening an account?

Once he uses it and sees the interest they pay on any balance he may want to keep it for everyday use.

On this trip I used my FairFX and a new one to me - TransferWise. This was really good and I got pop up notifications every time it was used. You get account info so other people can pay money in - handy for you to top up for him in emergencies 😉😄 It’s a borderless account with a MasterCard so can use lots of currencies.

He could just use it for the time he's there then close it... but it's such a good account he'd probably want to keep it. You can use it in this country as a normal account.
