Mobile Inside prison, Britain behind bars

Just watching this. Gobsmacked with how the prisoners behave and run the prison.

I am on the second episode, what infuriated me is that some of them brag about how many times they have been in prison. If they think it’s something to brag about then the system isn’t working.
I do feel sorry for those that have fallen into a life of crime due to drug abuse as I think everyone deserves a chance to start over in those circumstances and they need help to turn their lives around but the ones who blatantly don’t give a crap and think it’s clever are something else.

I agree, I know there is a lot of drug issues and mental health but I dont know what came first.

Either the system isn't working for a rehab process or we are too soft on them

I was a DC until retirement and investigated many, many offences that resulted in Prison sentences upon conviction. I also spoke to many offenders upon release as they once more figured in investigations that I was responsible for. Criminals only stop committing crime when they get bored with it. They certainly do not fear incarceration.

I have always struggled with the way that our prisons are run and administered. You are only sent to prison when you richly deserve it and generally when there is little alternative. This to me means it is a punishment and therefore it is not unreasonable to expect that they are punished. If some emerge a better person, then that is a bonus, rather than a pre requisite.

Prison should be harsh, unpleasant, and punitive. That it is not is a travesty. I feel that this is what the victims of crime would very much prefer. I have no interest in rehabilitation and would gladly see all additional offending within the prison resulting in Solitary Confinement.

The World has gone soft.

The Crime and Punishment series was the same. Lunatics running the asylum. Some youngish governor who seemed more bothered about prisoners’ rights than hard discipline. As a result violence was through the roof, and staff were leaving in droves.
The time served underlings’ faces told the whole story when they were being asked to go soft - they had probably been doing the job when the governor was in nappies. Needless to say, she didn’t last.
One guy was getting violent as they were searching him for drugs (he had tons) but just wanted to watch Love Island in peace.

If I make it as far as pensionable age I’m going to rob a bank. If I get away with it I’ll be rich, if I don’t I get free bed and board.(plus gym, exercise facilities, tv, games, library, etc) Win, win really.

There is that saying that we should put old people into prisons and the prisoners into care homes and see what happens
