NEW - Virgin to change loyalty programme

The Chief Marketing Officer for Virgin Red announced this today:-

"Virgin Points – the new reward currency for Virgin companies – has launched today. This is in preparation for the launch of Virgin Red, a new Virgin-wide rewards club which will be revealed soon. Unlike other loyalty programmes where points vanish, our points have no use-by-date – so no matter what life throws at our members, Virgin Points can be used whenever they want.

Because Virgin Points will eventually be the currency used across all of the different Virgin companies, Flying Club miles have been rebranded to Virgin Points today. This rebrand doesn’t change how existing Flying Club members can collect or spend points around the globe."

So far, apart from changing the expiry rules, this is basically just a name change. It will though be very interesting to see what plans Virgin has for the new Virgin Red rewards club.

Trying to find out more at the moment - please continue to check the VS FLying Club website for information.

This has now appeared on the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club website:-

"Exciting changes to your miles
As of 24th September 2020, Flying Club miles will never expire. They’ll also have a new name - Virgin Points. This change means that you can build up your Virgin Points balance for as long as you want, and enjoy rewards at your leisure – whenever you’re ready."

Edited to add new offer from Virgin re the introduction of Virgin Points.

To celebrate the launch of the new ‘Virgin Points’ loyalty currency, Virgin Atlantic is offering double points on all Virgin Atlantic flights purchased directly from 24 September up to and including 1 October 2020. This can be a flight in any cabin, to any destination, in any class. Double Points details:-

Members must book a flight through virginatlantic.com, virginholidays.co.uk or via the contact centre to be eligible for the bonus.
Flights must be both operated by Virgin Atlantic and marketed by Virgin Atlantic (flight number starts with VS) to be applicable for the bonus points. Codeshare flights are excluded from this offer.
Travel completed in all classes will earn double points per sector.
Applicable for flights booked and tickets issued between 24th September 2020 – 1st October 2020.
Reward tickets are excluded from this offer, apart from Points Plus Money bookings which are applicable for bonus points.
Gold members (60%) and Silver members (30%) will still earn tier bonus points. The promotional points will be included in the tier bonus.

This offer probably won't be of interest to most DIBB members due to general uncertainty about our travel in the future but an offer is an offer regardless.

I suspect the meeting went like this...
CEO asks IT department to extend they expiries because of covid.
IT department advise CEO how much of a pain in the whatnots this is, (and how much it will cost)
CEO tells marketing to spin it into a campaign.

I'm not moaning, just commenting as it clearly benefits everyone.

Even before Covid the plan was to move away from miles and move to points that could be used at all Virgin businesses. Looks like its another step closer.

I hope they don't change the 'bonus' of free upgrade from the credit card, I've not had a chance to book anything.

Wonder how many points I'll need for a premium economy upgrade for next December? Can't remember if points show up in your account as soon as the flight is booked?
