As others have said it happens a fair bit across the industry and they have certain statistics for no shows, cancellations etc, so it’s a bit of a gamble. I flew once on my own with delta, was offered about £600 I think to get the next flight, unfortunately that was no good to me as I needed to get to my destination, refused them offer and I got upgraded to business class. Win for me.

Flying back from a week in New York on the 9pm flight , rebooked onto the 11pm and enough in vouchers to pay for flights to Vegas a few months later. Thank you American Airlines.

We volunteered to go on a later flight home from jfk one year (connection from mco) on an AA flight. Compensation was enough to get us return flights to mco the next year so we were happy. Another year flying virgin lgw to mco they were offering compensation for anyone who would travel up to manchester and fly from there instead. We declined. The compensation was low. I guess the last to check in would have had no choice. One reason we always check in early. The big issue now would be if you had to fly out a day later and you had done your covid test 3 days before you would need another test.

Thanks for the responses!

Sounds like the best thing is to check in as soon as you can.

Sounds like they’re usually very generous with anyone who wants to be bumped though.

Volunteered twice to step down. First time, we had a cheap late booking for a weekend in Toronto in 2001. BA offered us twice as much as our whole break cost to take a flight via Boston. We would have lost about 4 hours of our short break but would have come out in profit.

We were given some food vouchers to go and get something to eat while waiting to hear. Got back to find we could travel after all but were given exit row seats and a £50 duty free voucher each to spend on board.

Second time was about three years ago on an easyJet flight to Berlin. Was offered €400 to take a flight 90 minutes later. Sadly, they didn't need me and I just ended up getting on as usual with not so much as a free cuppa to say thanks.
