I see Hertz have a location at Blue Lagoon but they dont get a good write up. Some people complaining that its a desk in the hotel but on many occasions one turns up or if they do they are late. Not sure what to think?
We've always collected the car from AVIS when we arrive at MIA, just easier with all the luggage and if up early, we can just get enroute in the morning.

We fly into MIA often, have stayed once at Blue Lagoon and never again, for the price was awful. We stay at one of the Dolphin mall hotels usually, great place for bargains and a Cheesecake Factory. We only do the shuttles/Uber if cruising out of Miami. If driving we get the car straight away and head off the next day. Usually up early anyhow.
Coming home we find it quite good for the last day, leave at check out time and get near to MIA as poss. and have nice late lunch/early dinner etc and head into the airport. We often look for the earlier flight if going home out of MIA.

So we have just moved over to this flight from Virgin, and it's nearly a 2k saving on our holiday.

I see the drive back to Orlando is just over 3hrs.

What do people recommend? Stay in a hotel near the airport, or just get in the hire car and drive back up to Orlando on the same night?

You will get a number of replies both for going straight there or the opposite and stay overnight. Arriving at 1820 by the time you clear immigration, pick up the bags, get to the Car Rental Centre then drive up to your Orlando accommodation either up the Turnpike, I95 or US27 it is going to be midnight at the earliest.

My personal preference is to stay overnight , take advantage of jet lag getting up really early the next morning and driving up when feeling a bit rested. As mentioned by other posters there are many hotels around the airport area - there is a Sheraton just opposite the Car Rental Centre where you can walk across the road to pick up the car and we have had stays at other hotels where their airport shuttle driver will take you to the CRC for a tip.

I am sure other Dibbers will be along with ideas and tips if you choose to drive straight there too.

We are on that flight next August and are stopping overnight. Amazingly a flight the next morning to MCO was effectively free as the price to Mco via Miami with an overnight stop was the same price as a flight to Miami if done as a custom trip on BA’s website so thats worth considering. BA use AA for the Miami to MCO flights and there were loads of options for a flight the following morning.

Hey, thanks for the tip.

Were staying in Kissimmie, which is 3hrs 20 minutes according to google maps. I've no issue doing the drive, just not keen on doing it in the dark. Have you done the the drive up to Orlando from Florida? It looks relativity straight forward, looks like your basically sat on the highway/motorway the entire time?

I have done the route both ways using the Turnpike and the US 27 - to be honest both are fairly boring for the majority of the drive but the US27 would offer more opportunity to stop for a coffee or a break if you need one but there are some service stations on the Turnpike too (I am not too keen on stopping later at night though) . Undoubtedly your driving would be in the dark so that is something to consider. I personally wouldn't get off a flight and do the drive straight off but other Dibbers do and some pick up the car and stop at a hotel en route after an hours drive or so, Getting out of or into Miami depending on direction of travel can be a nightmare due to traffic and you certainly need your wits about you.

It is all down to personal preference and if you think you would be able to drive safely.

We've took your advice and booked the Sheraton for that night, how easy is it to get from the airport over to the hotel?

I have no issue with the driving, but not that keen on doing a night drive in a foreign country after being sat on a plane for 9 hrs.

So the hotel is the best option for us.
