Half Dome Permit Lottery
Has anyone on theDibb managed to get a permit to climb Half Dome? Those cables look brutal but I've done some bouldering in the past so I'd really like to attempt it. We'll be travelling early next October so hopefully we stand a chance of getting a permit pass!

I looked at climbing Half Dome, but the thought of other people on the cables part put me off. We did the hike up to Glacier Point, which overlooks Half Dome. If you don't end up climbing Half Dome that's a good and safer alternative. It's still a strenuous hike, although the name Four Mile trail sounds easy, it's a good 9 mile hike there and back. Uphill switchbacks on the way (allow at least three hours) and reverse on the way back (at least two hours) Hard on the knees especially coming down. The view at the top is simply amazing, and feels even more special after the effort of the climb.

We're planning on doing the 4-mile trail as well! Then depending on if we get a permit to climb Half Dome we'll either do the full trail via the Mist Trail or the Mist Trail by itself.
We spent a week in North Wales last year and did quite a few hikes around Snowdonia. The best was the Snowdon Horseshoe which was 7 miles long and went up 3 peaks (including Snowdon). It was foggy at the top so we didn't get the full spectacular views, although the hot drink in the cafe made up for it!

I've climbed Snowdon on the Llanberis path, and it compares with the 4 Mile trail in terms of how strenuous it is and time to complete. In fact the elevation is coincidentally almost identical to the top of Glacier Point from the valley floor.

That's handy to know then. The 4 mile trail should hopefully ease us in to completing the half dome hike the following day

Has anyone hiked up Half Dome? Wondering how scary it is on those cables.

I've looked at it too, but the The thought of the coming down the cables scares me more than the up. We did Striding Edge last summer and that was scary enough.I also wouldn't like the fact there are so Mny people up there doing it too, jostling if you get the fear or some me one else does and can't move
