We flew into San Francisco and out of LA. Spent 6 days in SF and then headed across and down through the mountains. (Loved Mammoth Mountain area)
The scenery was unbelievable. Then Death Valley and through to LA then Anaheim. A few days in LA for Universal and other touristy sites. Stayed at Paradise Pier for 3 nights (in a club room which was awesome) but would have done more! There's still something about the 'original' park...

If you did WDW thinking it would be a one off 'trip of a lifetime' then you will find out that the same applies to the west coast! Not possible to cover all of what the state has to offer in 1-2 weeks! Opinions differ but we like 4 days at Disney, but alot of that is soaking up the atmosphere. Tar Pits are ok but not worth a special trip, best to combine with a day trip. A car would be useful though public transport is getting better, (driving is a pain though). Defo a split stay, with Burbank or Santa Monica for the non Disney stuff. After that, you are spoilt for choice! San Diego, San Franciso, Palm Springs/Vegas/Joshua Tree/Death Valley/Yosemite. Great advice often given out here is don't plan a different hotel every night, give yourself chance to explore the area. Afraid that's about it, it really is up to you and what 'rocks your boat!'
