Fort Lauderdale, whats it like?

There are some cheap flights to Fort Lauderdale for next year, I was thinking a week in Orlando and heading to Fort Lauderdale for a week. What is it like, beaches nearby, restaurants, things to do? Anybody been that liked it! Thanks Sandra x

We did 3 nights in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago, stayed Ina fab hotel opposite the beach, Atlantic Beach hotel(?). We had a car so could drive to eateries and malls, drove to the Everglades for an airboat ride, fab. Beach is great, but end of August weather was not great, rain and cloud.

Thanks for replying, we were in Bradenton last August and beginning September and had bad weather too! Not sure whether to go to Fort Lauderdale or not!

We thought it was nice. Stayed (also in August a few years ago) at the Largo Mar Resort- quirky but with great staff and a fabulous pool and stretch of beach. We were only there a couple of nights but ventured to Las Olas Boulevard for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory & a promenade. We'd return for a short stay as I quite fancy a boat tour of the super yachts and canal system and some beach time.

I'm following this thread with interest as we've had to cancel the last two nights of our holiday which should have been spent in the Keys. We are flying home from Fort Lauderdale so we are looking to stay somewhere in this area which we've never been to before.

We were there Oct 2015,stayed 4 days, it really wasn't long enough, it is really beautiful, quite cosmopolitan, with all the big yachts, we did a gondola boat tour, seen lots of yachts belonging to stars. You can hire bikes to cycle along the promenade.
Lots of great restaurants on Las Olas Boulevard, you aren't far from Miami either if you fancied a day there.
We stayed at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach resort, the rooms are massive, very clean, huge bathrooms, it overlooks the beach.

We might do an airboat tour this time.

There are water taxis however they do not arrive on time, it is really easy enough walking everywhere.

There is also Sawgrass Mills largest shopping outlet in USA.(if that floats your boat)
We are going back, shows how much we liked it.

Thanks you for posting this Dawn - it sounds like it might be a good choice for the end of our holiday - we're not beach people tbh so we were worried there might not be enough to do to keep us interested.

We stayed at the W Fort Lauderdale, first night.
I would say it was much nicer than the Hilton( we are at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach) just now. If you signed up for SPG rewards you can earn these whilst staying at the W Fort Lauderdale. The W has just been newly refurbished too.
Hilton charged our cc $75 per night on arrival we are here 5 nights, I completely forgot they do that, it annoyed me.
The only parking at the hotel is Valet Parking at $39.99, we parked elsewhere.

Really nice Italian restaurant Caffe Europa on las Olas boulevard.
Would also recommend the Riverfront Gondola Tours.
Really lovely breeze coming from a seaside location.
