Roasts and dauphinoise for us. I used to also do mash when my mum was with us.

The thing is not everyone can cook good roast potatoes anyway. My son will be cooking them in goose fat on Christmas Day but I am really not keen so will happily have mash.

Hmmm.. Goose Fat.

I only ever use Olive Oil for roasting potatoes, Carrots or Parsnips. I even baste with it on meat sometimes. Olive Oil seems to make things crispier, particularly potatoes that have first been par boiled and subjected to a ‘fluffing’ in the colander.

Im exactly the same. I make a lovely roastie by parboiling the potatoes, then draining water off, put some oil in and shake shake shake until all coated then put into roasting tin.

Ps. Said SIL is defo off the Xmas card list and has been for a good few years 😉
When I was younger we always had both with Sunday dinner and Christmas dinner, but nowadays I only cook roast but they sometimes turn into mash if I forget and boil them too long

I love mash, but not with a roast dinner - I love my roasties too much and I’d never have room for both!

However, I noticed in M&S at the weekend when I was picking up my prepared Christmas veg that there was a whole row of mashed potato - so tell DSIL that if Marksies say it goes in a Christmas dinner then it’s definitely posh to have it, not common! 😂😂

We have just moved north to be near ds and family and was not horrified to be asked if we would host Christmas for them and her parents but when they told us we would have to have mash potato and Yorkshire puddings with turkey we laughed and said they were having us on. Did not go down well especially when we said you never have either with Christmas lunch in the south. Guess Saturday I am cooking mash and Yorkshire potatoes for 6 and not for dh and myself as it is one northern custom along with being called: duck, mate, darling etc that we cannot get used to.

I am about as northern as they come and didn’t realise mash or Yorkshire puddings were a thing with a Christmas dinner ! But if that’s what you want then go for it. Not quite sure why people feel the need to be snooty about it.
