A good day out near to York is also York Maze, great day out. DD also loved the train museum, we underestimated how much there was to do there!

Our daughters liked Dig, dogging theough the sand to find bones. They also enjoyed the castle museum with the old fashioned streets in it.

I'd use the park and ride for parking. Your other option would be to go by train (probably from Scarborough rather than Filey). The railway Museum is by the back of the station.

As others have said it's small and easy to walk around. my favourite part of the city walls is between Bootham Bar and Goodramgate Bar, you go past the back of the Minster.

Museum gardens are good to let the children run around, there are the old St Mary's abbey ruins and the Yorkshire Museum (it has a new dinosaur exhibition opening at Easter) also nice place for an ice cream. You can then go the back way to the National Railway Museum, down to the river by Marygate, over Scarborough Bridge and a 5 minute walk.

As for the Castle Museum it's fab but I wouldn't do it and the railway museum in one day with small children. It's by Clifford's tower though and in the summer they are setting up Shakespeare's Rose Theatre just outside (smaller version of the Globe).

Eating, so many places to choose from, lots of chain places but also nice pubs and tea rooms, it's easy to just wander and choose.

Clueless about big cities 😂 I don't want to do both if we are going to be rushing about etc the transport museum is the more important one to us .
We've been to York a few times in the last few months (DD is there for a year). The first time we stayed at the Premier Inn, Blossom St North. We found the best parking was at the Railway station - reasonable price and very central. There are also a couple of Park & Rides which are reasonably priced too - although the Railway Station Car Park worked out cheaper for us and was more convenient!

When we went for a full weekend a few weeks ago, we stayed at a Premier Inn just outside the city centre and walked in.

The Railway museum is fab for all ages. We also visited the Jorvik Centre - it doesn't take much time to go around it and don't think a 2 year old will be impressed

We also went to the Yorkshire Museum and Castle Museum. The Castle museum is great - lots for all ages and took us several hours to get around it all.

Just remembered the new food trucks by the market are supposed to be really good and fairly cheap for food.
If you fancy wandering you can get a free cat trail to look for cat statues on the roof line, might keep the children amused.

If you've only got 1 day the railway museum will take up the vast majority of that so I would either go for 2 days if you can or choose just 1 other activity or you will find yourself rushing and not getting round everything.
