Virgin Nut Policy

Hi There

I am wondering if there are any Dibbers out there with severe nut allergies. It has been 6 years since we last flew with Virgin and it would appear their nut policy has changed albeit slightly.

JUst wondering if there is anyone with recent experience on any of their flights. We will be taking our own food but last time they made an announcement and they had a policy of not selling nuts onboard.

Thanks

Don't pack nuts in your carry on, do not open food containing nut, and do not let a nut roam free about the cabin, if you see what I mean

after all, it's in everyone's best interest, you included.

If there is anyone with severe nut allergy on the plane, and they come in contact with one of your nuts (I know how weird that sentence sounds) the plane might need to make an emergency landing, thus delaying everyone on board, and not just the poor fellow with the allergy ...

Im sorry, I know people are going to be mixed about this, but I stand on the side that feels that why should, 1) the airline be responsible for telling everyone and 2) why should everyone have to be careful what they eat.
It is up to the passenger to feel that they can fly and are healthy to fly.
I have flown several different airlines in the last few years and twice on American owned ones, they have told allergy sufferers that they would not limit anything and they would have to disembark if they were not safe to fly. A UK one did announce but passengers ignored it and the staff admitted there was nothing they could actually do to stop people.
You could be sitting next to or near someone who decides to open nuts either knowingly or unknowingly what ever is announced.

Next, they will start banning meat on planes as it offends.

I think this is harsh... it isn’t that nuts offend people it’s that they can make them seriously unwell and everyone ends up with a medical emergency on the flight which is no fun for anyone.. there is no reason why people can’t go without nuts for nine hours..
my son is autistic and only eats certain foods one being Nutella sandwiches (we take them on every journey as it’s the only sandwich filling he will eat) but there’s no way I would open them if we had been asked not to open nut based products due to an allergy.

Thank you, naivity is one of my biggest frustrations. Having a nephew with autism I know what a sacrifice this would be to your comfort and ease of journey. However.. I think I speak for everyone who has a life threatening allergy when I appreciate your actions.

But then they serve food with nuts in? There were cereal bars for sale last time we were on a plane.

OP. Virgin don't serve peanuts with drinks. They give a little bag of Penn State sour cream and chive pretzels. Very nice too.

My Daughters best friend has a severe nut allergy and has carried a 'pen' with her since she was little so for over 25 years now. I have seen the consequences of nut exposure and it's horrendous.

Probably 50% of the flights we take with Virgin they make an announcement asking people not to consume any peanuts they have.

If it announced on your flight that someone has a severe allergy to nuts, and you just can't wait 7-9 hours to open a packet of your favourite KP Nuts, at least ask those in your close vicinity if they have an allergy.

'Course, by asking, those in your vicinity will probably presume you have the patience of a 4 year old. You take a risk either way. I wouldn't want to be responsible for someone potentially going to the grave early.

This, fellow readers, is the very definition of a post hoc logical fallacy. What a silly comparison to make.

I agree with you. My DD is also autistic and one of the few foods she eats is Peanut Butter & Jam sandwiches. Even so, she never takes them to school as a boy in her class has a severe nut allergy and we would never take them on a plane. It makes things extremely inconvenient for us as it means we can't take a sandwich for her on the plane and she is unlikely to eat the plane food unless it is chips and chicken nuggets but surely that is better than life threatening for someone else.
