If you do a dummy booking on the Disney site for next year it’s the difference in cost between the dining plans.

There is a banner on the Virgin Holidays site when you go to upgrade to the Dining package that says (unable to upload a picture as I am in work):

"A Disney Ultimate park ticket ... is required when adding a Disney Dining Plan during the free Disney Dining offer period"

Read in to that what you may

You can upgrade the dining plan. If you book with a travel agent and not Disney I wouldn't bother though as they charge far more to upgrade than it actually costs. We were quoted £275 per person from qsdp to normal dining plan.

They just charge the difference between the package you have and normal cost of package you're upgrading too. We did it last time from QSDP to DDP but considering sticking to quick service this time.

One other thing to factor into the upgrade cost is the cost of tips. From memory tips for our party of 4 (2d 2c) were in the region of $40-$50 per table service meal. over the course of a fortnight this was a significant cost. Plus on the dining plan you tip on the value of the meal. So even if you don't eat dessert (because you are so full from all the food you get on the dining plan) you still have to tip on the cost of the dessert.

For this reason (and for the fact that we found it was too much food) we will not be upgrading again as we didn't think it was worth the money.

Your receipt shows the food and drink that you ordered and the tip is then calculated on that. If you don't order a dessert, then it's not on the receipt, so the tip will be lower. They don't just add them to bump the cost of the meal up.

I'm not 100% sure what point you're making? You always have to buy tickets when booking the dining plan, whether it's paid or free. Or is it that they're mentioning free dining? I can't see the banner that you're referring to when I look at their site.

loves2plan - I didn't know that! Think I'll keep that to myself though as I don't want to upgrade and my other half does and this is part of my argument not to!
