What are these light fittings?
I have these light fittings(fixtures? something?) all through my hall way and landing and I loathe them. They're so close to the ceiling I can't get any of the light shades I own/have bought to fit properly or look right on them.
Does anyone know either what kind of light shades I can put on them that will actually fit and look ok, or how easy it is to change to a 'normal' light fixture that can take any light shade I might fancy? Do I need an electrician?

Those fittings tend to appear in bathrooms and kitchens.
You need this type I assume? Only a few £ ready made in places like Screwfix albeit I would use an electrical wholesaler for better quality gear. A 10 minute job to change for an electrician. I woud do my own. I wouldn't do it yourself unless you are au fait with electrics. Edit. How old is your house? I just noticed the artex. Be careful as the ancient stuff contains asbestos. Fine if not disturbed though.

I was just going to post the same pic. No one can tell you how easy it will be to swap without looking at how its wired. You might take it down and its two wires or it might have loads of wires to reconnect. If your doing it yourself take pics and take each cable out one at a time and label them or just get an electrician in its not going to cost much.

We had that type of fitting in bathroom we bought a globe glass lampshade that fitted to that until we had rewire done then had all light fittings replaced and renewed, not expensive and not expensive for an electrician to come in and replace I would think compared to most jobs you get tradesmen in for, well in our case lol but we bought the original house that Jack built... We also had an awful lot of that textured artex too... The mess having it removed was horrendous, its up in a couple of rooms still where it wasn't as noticeable but we were told it was safe

Thanks all, I shall get an electrician in to be safe as neither I nor my partner are to be trusted with electrics!
Don't get me started on the artex... the house is maybe 20 years old so I think built just as it was going out of fashion. :/ I assume that's not old enough to contain asbestos? I'd love to be rid of it but that's not on the radar any time soon, still got the ghastly bathrooms to update first.

20 year old artex doesn't contain asbestos.
A good plasterer will reskim the ceiling over artex without ripping the whole lot down. There is an abrasive tool you can buy to whip off the high points to make it easier for them. Saves having to do what I did a week ago and rip down a 70yr old ceiling to get spot lights in! Big mess.

Oh I didn't know you didn't have to rip the whole lot down, perhaps I'll ask someone to quote me. I so loathe it.

I’m a week in and gone from photo 1 to photo 2.
The line around the ceiling is where I will put new 125mm coving. I may be nearly 65 but I can still board a ceiling.
