Insurance - Elephants in the room

Apologies if this has been covered. My inclination to be on the dibb is somewhat suppressed at the moment. I haven't read as much as I usually do.

I have seen plenty of discussion about insurance paying out for cancelled/declined trips. However assuming we do get somewhat back to normal for summer and the summer trips go ahead, is the big elephant in the room, how you insurance will deal with things if you catch it out there ? Then following on from that how expensive insurance will be for next years trips?

I think it depends on two things -
1. When you tool out the insurance. Many are saying 18th March is the deadline.
2. Whether you are travelling against FCO advice.

Surly travel insurance will have to increase following all the claims?

Nationwide have emailed out to say bookings before the 18th March are covered. I’d imagine it’ll be similar to the ash cloud and no one will be covered for a while. Insurance companies will have to wait it out like the rest of us and get a feel for how likely this is to happen again. I would imagine you may be able to pay extra in the future for pandemic cover but it won’t come as standard.

I think another problem is annual insurance renewal. Renewals are unlikely to cover CV19 which makes future holiday bookings risky is this is the case.

yes our annual insurance provider has stated future trips will not be covered for COVID so i think until they have a readily available vaccine or test to show proof of immunity its going to be impossible to get a policy to cover it.

That's my concern as well, and I think I'm going to have to wait until our renewal before I make any future bookings.

This is the problem i have as we are due to travel and of July but my annual policy is to renewed in May so I won't be covered.

I don't see how this can be right,I am being penalised for having an annual policy.

New bookings will not provide COVID-19 cover whether you have annual policy or a single journey policy.

I work in the industry and insurance is there to guard against certain risks not something which is already happening (i.e. COVID-19)

If by some miracle my holiday was to go ahead, I would be covered for it because I booked a year ago, I assume this will be the case for my holiday booked a few months ago for 2021.

I assume however I wouldn’t be covered if I rebook my non-miraculous May holiday!

I've been wondering this too as my annual travel insurance runs out in September and I'm deciding whether to rebook our holiday or wait a bit.

Say the FCO lifted it's no travel advice and we went on holiday later in the year (we can only hope at this stage!), I can understand that the travel insurance wouldn't cover us for cancellation but would they cover medical expenses if we got Covid-19 out there and needed medical attention?
