I have very loving and calm border terrier who never barks. A couple of years ago when walking down a very quiet lane she started growling quietly. She had spotted a man in very dark clothes sitting on a drain cover near a field. He looked at me but never moved and my dog went mad, barking and growling at him. I quickly walked back the way I came. She’s never done that again. You never know, but they do have a sixth sense

I have always trusted my dog (s) instincts over everything. They have a great judge of character.

My beautiful Mr. Douglas, was the most unconfrontational dog I have ever known, he was scared of a Hedgehog once, but hey I don't care, I was put on this earth to protect him. My beautiful baby boy. xxxx

Some interesting replies on here. Doesn’t apply to me now as we no longer have our own furry friend but my DS has 2 shar pies (a breed specifically developed for loyalty and protection of Chinese royalty, I believe). These dogs honestly have the nicest temperament of any breed I’ve ever come across over many decades. They are loving, loyal teddy bears but always alert and watchful of strangers. Woe betide anyone visiting with doubtful intentions. I’m confident the dogs would defend to the last. However, that said, heaven help poor DIL if on a wet day if she were to get in a sticky situation when outdoors, because her lovely, loyal furry bodyguards refuse to go out in the rain! Must not rain much in China then?

I have a lab and lakeland terrier, off the lead they are both fine lab loves everyone and terrier can be a bit vocal. On the lead the lab is totally different, all the kids can still mess with him but hes not fussed on men coming to close, especially if they have their hoods up.
If I said 'get them' I am sure he would.

During our married life we’ve had 2 dogs, both Westies and both very different characters.
Our first was Flynn who was as brave as a lion and definitely an alpha type dog, the second was Monty, who was as soft as they come. I don’t think anyone would have got near us with Flynn but Monty, he would have licked them to death. I remember watching a video once of a set up situation, where the dogs owners were threatened and the reaction of the dog. Most of the dogs barked then ran away, only one or two actually stayed and defended their owner, which surprised me. I’ll try and find the video .

One of our terriers is a Westie x Jack Russell. She is such a busy little dog on walks investigating everything so I think any threat would pass her by! She would be too busy at the bottom of a tree waiting for squirrels!
