Thankfully but sadly due to some terrible highlighted cases people take it much more seriously now. It was harder to manage relatives who insisted putting peanuts out as snacks that said "just tell her not to eat them!" Eating at friends and sleepovers were always a worry. My DD has some fantastic friends that always took her allergy seriously and helped make sure she was safe. She wore a medic alert bracelet too until that became embarrassing to wear 😬 I got her plastic allergy bands when she went to 6th form just because there was so many people who weren't able to know about her allergy. I think she wore it once😳 Thankfully she's ok with hazelnuts but we steer well clear of kiwi fruits too as advised by her consultant. Can cause a similar reaction in some people.

Hi thanks for replies, after googling I'm massively overwhelmed, Dr said to him no Indian food and careful drinking from glasses in case anyone ate nuts before you, gave 2 pens, printout how to use pens and printout of bloods
He has consultant and access to dietician for his diabetes but is there anyone he can see specifically for his allergies? What about eating here? When at college he will normally get a sandwich or something from bakers, on blood test he scored low for hazelnuts but reacted when he had dairy milk whole nut, lips started to swell, throat tight and tummy pain, nut mix was low as well, what would that include? We won't be doing the parks in August due to crowds and heat but probably go to disney springs so will go to trex restaurant, more offsite restaurants we will go to, currently ruled out yoders in Sarasota and steak n shake Thanks

Have a look here allergyuk/
Please don't be freaked out by it at first it all seems very daunting but it's not as bad to manage as you think. Was he given an allergy plan by the consultant? DDs got updated every year by the allergy nurse attached to the children's dept until she left college. I realise he's an adult at 20 but does he have other specialist nurse input? DDs has so far been managed with high dose antihistamine if she's had a reaction. The thing I am always mindful of is if they do have a reaction they can have another rebound reaction hours later. At first I was terrified about the whole curry nut and cup sharing thing but it's all about taking sensible precautions and making others aware. Does he have asthma hay fever and eczema too? DD has all thoseso is very atopic allergic to a lot. She sneezes brushing her own hair! We've kind of learnt to adapt as time goes on. If he's at college go in and talk to the nurse they will prob ask for a copy of a care plan. As for his lunches he just needs to ask when buying anything. Kinerton chocolate is a no no in any shape or form for DD. Thankfully she can tuck into Nutella no problem as she doesn't react to hazelnuts. That would really cheese her off if she couldn't eat that. 😆

Watch out for fast food places who cook their fries in peanut oil. My DS has a nut allergy so he never eats at Steak 'n Shake or Five Guys. Also be careful at the Chinese/Thai, although we have been assured no nuts are used or that peanut oil is not used my DS has had a couple of reactions, he refuses to eat anything other than Peking duck and sweets corn soup now.
All nut allergies are different. My DS is allergic to all nuts but he has to actually consume them. Someone else eating nuts nearby doesn't bring on his allergy. We are very careful about never leaving cutlery or glasses etc around unwashed if we've had anything with nuts though. We found out he was allergic when he was 3 so I think it was easier for us as we were totally in charge of what he ate. He's now 16 and is used to asking what is in his food if he eats anywhere new or at a restaurant. TBH his diet is fairly repetitive and I think that's more because he feels safe sticking to familiar foods. My DS has always had a high dose antihistamine as soon as he gets a reaction ( he immediately knows as his lips tingle then his tongue starts to swell). I always carry a bottle of antihistamine especially if we go out to eat or days out). I know it very daunting at the moment but it will get easier. Feel free to message me if you want some more help on anything. Gill Edited at 05:08 PM. |

Just to add, the Epipens dont seem to have a long expiry date on them, make sure you check the dates and get new ones when they are due to expire. I am allergic to penicillin, so easier to avoid, but have an undated letter from my GP to carry with me on flights. Not that anyone has ever queried me carrying epipens.

Our DD’s boyfriend as severe peanut allergy plus sesame seed allergy and fish. This is all new to us too (no previous experience of food allergies in our family) so when she started her realationship with him last year we were terrified to feed him 😥😂
He can eat anything actually that says “may contain” nuts which is lucky considering just how many foods have this on them, that I’d never even noticed before! I have to say as well that eating out is not easy, a recent visit to TGI fridays could have gone very badly due to poor information from the manager who was consulting the allergy information folder and she still couldn’t get the ingredients right 🤬 . |
