I’ve found it patchy and sometimes unreliable. I’ve also found it great on other occasions. Not sure if there is a pattern

I was amazed, based on WDW IT system, how good it was. I only lost reception in the occasional black spot for a minute or two

Trust me from someone who deals with WiFi installs a lot, the WiFi is very impressive considering the scale and amount of people/devices.

Also impressed with the WiFi considering the amount of people accessing in one area at a time. Granted, it dropped or struggled at times, but for what it is designed to be used for it is perfect.

I only struggled in largely populated areas, the rest of the time worked perfectly.

Not been since 2017 but genuinely never had any issues with the WIFI. Used it in the resort for Netflix and FaceTimed home just fine. FaceTimed from Magic Kingdom hub once, again fine. You’ve got some drop out areas and areas that are stronger than others but I’ve been in football stadiums, with less people, and not been able to access the WiFi at all. So Disney’s is perfectly fine to use for what you need it for.

Do I need to tell my phone provider that we are travelling to America? Sorry if this is a silly question - I've never left Europe!

No. But you might want to look into roaming phone and data costs and decide to switch it off.

If you are new to Virgin, definitely tell them! Just switching roaming on isn't enough - they have to do something their end to enable you to use it abroad. I got caught out by this before.
