New York Airports
Can anyone tell what is the best New York airport to fly into when planning on staying in Manhattan and are transfers readily available?

Hi Tartan,
We are flying to New York In September with AA which means arriving at JFK. At the moment we are undecided whether to get a yellow cab, which has a fixed price of $45, but when you add on toll charges and a tip that will increase to approx $55-60. The other option is to get the air train ($5) from JFK to Howard Beach Station and then the subway ($2) into Manhatten. The only draw back to the subway is taking your suitcases with you and lugging them up flights of stairs. If you look at tripadvisor and go into the New York forum, all kinds of questions like that are asked and answers are given by New York residents. A useful thing is to use the search function. Hope you have a good trip. Stu

Thanks Stu, never thought of using trip advisor. I'm actually doing some research for my bosses partner who is planning a trip in December.

Which hotel will you be staying at ?
The AirTrain is not something I would consider with heavy luggage as said above, with just a travel bag it is brilliant. The New York Airport Service bus picks you up at the terminal, right outside the front door - drops you off at Midtown for $27 per person Return trip - and no need to tip - but we always do - the drivers are really friendly. If you are staying near the Port Authority Bus Terminal you don't need to bother with the free transfer to the minibus that goes around the hotels - stay on the bus until the last stop and walk across the road to The Westin @ Times Square or Hilton Times Square or others nearby. It picks up at Grand Central Station too, which is handy for Sofitel. |

We flew into Newark and picked up a yellow cab from outside the airport to our hotel next to Grand Central Station.
It was an easy car ride - took about 30-40 mins, I'm not sure of the price but know that it wasn't extortionate, I seem to recall it was around the $50 mark, including tip. HTH

NY airport transportation
See if your hotel offers free pick ups.
Also, on the transportation floor, there is always a Mears type bus service that you can book to take you to your hotel. I found it cheaper than a taxi. You can go onto each airports website and see what ground transportation is available. I have flown into JFK and Newark and used the Mears type service |

Yes the hotel we stayed at did pick ups - although we didnt realise this until we were going home! They did charge us a per person fee for the return journey but it was all booked to pick us up at the correct time and was cheaper than a cab.
We caught a cab when we arrived but I cant remember how much it was - it was not too expensive. |
