Wild West Adventure - Cowboys and Canyons Day 3

Day 3, 26 September : Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon and on to Grand Canyon

Another disturbed night and wide awake at 0315 Rather than waste the time, we phoned home. Managed to get a bit of a doze and then gave up about 0600! Finished the packing ready for luggage collection and headed down for breakfast. Although we had the buffet again, we decided to opt for a lighter touch and just have fruit, yoghurt, cereal and toast.

We met up with the rest of the crew and were all loaded on the bus by 0800 and off to Sedona. This was a fairly short stage and we were there by about 1020.

This gave us time to make a pit stop and John and Pete wanted to buy hats before boarding our Pink Jeep Tour vehicle. They came back sporting Sedona baseball caps!

And the Scottsdale locals lied ….. it is just as hot at Sedona, if not hotter!

Rose and I ended up in the very back seats, which we’d been warned were the most bumpy of all! John got lucky and sat up front with the driver. We headed off into Oak Creek Canyon and before long the road gave way to what the driver described as a dirt track. This track was littered with loose rocks and made our Isle of Wight roads (we have to dodge the pot-holes!) seem like riding on air! This is what we had to negotiate

We had to pretty much abandon all hope of taking either photos or movies while we were travelling – way too much camera shake! Did manage to grab a quick photo of Snoopy Rock as we slowed down. It looks just like Snoopy laying on top of his kennel!

As we climbed higher up, the views became ever more incredible. It is quite a humbling experience to witness the beauty of Mother Nature’s creation. We reached a view-point and had an opportunity to get off the jeep and take as many pictures as we wanted. From this height, some 6,000 feet above sea level, we had the most amazing panoramic view back down over Sedona and the driver told us that the mountain range we could see in the distance is, in fact, 85 miles away!

There are cacti growing everywhere and look what we found ……..

All photo’d out, we climbed back on board and John sat with me in the back and gave Pete a chance to have a more comfy ride. Back in Sedona we headed for lunch. John and I both had a cheeseburger – pretty much on a par with Beaches & Cream! Rose had a roast beef sandwich and Pete had spaghetti and meatballs. For pudding, we all decided to have ice cream. Rose and Pete opted for a pecan cone, I had a tub of mango sorbet and John had a tub of strawberry and cookies and cream.

Once we’d all finished we went off to have a nosey round. There are some really lovely, but very expensive, shops here, but we did manage to find one or two things to bring home! It was almost time to make our way back to the coach park, so armed with yet more bottles of water, we headed back and found a bench in the shade (but it wasn’t any cooler!) and waited to board the bus!

We had a two and a half hour drive ahead of us now as we climbed higher and higher up the mountain, zig-zagging our way towards the Grand Canyon. It got very hot on the coach with the afternoon sun blazing down through the windows. Unfortunately, the majority of these Titans seem to feel the cold and keep asking for the air-con to be toned down

By about 1710 we’d arrived at the I-Max theatre where some of the mob were going to watch the film about the early settlers. As we’d already seen it on our last visit, we gave it a miss and headed on to the hotel. Tonight’s resting place is the Best Western Squire Inn – the Gateway to the Canyon. It’s a lovely hotel and there are some beautiful sculptures and paintings in the public areas. The rooms have photos of the Canyon and the furniture and furnishings all have an Indian theme. We found the hotel shop and, yes, bought some more stuff!

After a brief rest, we met up again and decided on the buffet dinner option. This consisted of mushroom soup, assorted salads, various dressings, pasta salads, shell-on prawns, chicken quarters, ribs, roast beef, spinach ravioli, ratatouille, vegetable rice, mashed potato, gravy, fries, mini hot dogs, and then an assortment of melons, pineapple and various cakes.

After dinner, we ventured outside to find the temperature had dropped quite dramatically and it was actually a bit chilly! So, we returned to our rooms and I downloaded the photos so far and caught up with the trippy. John is already in bed and snoring, so I think I’ll make a coffee and might watch a bit of US TV (pun intended! )

An early start tomorrow as we have an 0800 helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon. We suggested that it might be wise to skip breakfast and then get something when we get to the South Rim!
