Route 66

I am using my time at home dreaming of future holidays after this years was cancelled. One I have always wanted to do is a Route 66 road trip and so I have been planning a fictional future holiday, which hopefully will become reality at some point when covid is a thing of the past.

Has anyone done it? Any advise, stories, pictures, tips? Would love to hear from other people who have done it so I can dream about the future more!

We were due to do some of the California/Arizona section next month but sadly our trip is postponed, and we have moved our flights to next April where we plan to do a very small section as we travel to the Grand Canyon. Following you thread with interest as we’d like to do the whole route from Chicago to LA when we retire in 3 years.

I am really sorry your trip was postponed My trip to the Florida Keys and Disney in April/ May was cancelled as well, it is really sad.

The Arizona section of Route 66 looks like lots of fun, and I would definitely do the detour to the Grand Canyon as that is another bucket list item

Have a look on the Pre Trip Report section in General Trip Reports. Lynda (Fuellady) did a detailed pre trip for the whole of Route 66 for their cancelled trip this year

We haven’t done the trip yet, but we had a fully planned Route 66 trip planned for April/May this year which of course was cancelled. I have a pre-trip in my signature that might give you some ideas.

I found it quite a difficult trip to plan until I got into my stride with it, so if you want any planning tips I’m happy to help. 😁

Edited to add: thanks Alicia for the recommendation above - I didn’t notice it until I had replied)

Edited at 11:12 PM.

Thank you both so much - I did a search of the Dibb for Route 66 but didn't find this!

Fuellady, I am so sorry your trip got cancelled, but I bet you cannot wait to go in future! I have found your report and am going to sit and read it after work

We are gutted it was cancelled, but the plans are still in place for as soon as we can manage to re-book it. Thank you! Have a read of this thread too - there’s lots of good advice on it.

Amazing, thank you I thought Route 66 would be a more popular choice on here, but I seem to have been proved wrong!

I would love to go April/ May next year...but it may be too soon as I cannot fly that far in a mask with my asthma so I may need to wait and see...

I really hope you get your trip ASAP (and then write a trip report of course! )

We did Route 66 last April/ May starting in Chicago
We did a detour going to Lake Havasu ,Monument Valley,Grand canyon and Vegas
We used the Ez66 guide as well as a Route 66 Facebook page .
It was certainly an amazing experience.

I thought it would be popular too, but also struggled for info. I read some west coast reports as some people touch on R66 for a day or so while heading to Grand Canyon.

I think April/May is a good time to visit. We were hoping to reschedule for that time next year but America is such a mess at the moment that we might decide to delay.
