I agree, we stayed just off Union Square and much preferred it to the more "touristy" Fisherman's Wharf. Everything was easy to get to from there and we did Dylan's Tours and they picked us up by Union Square and for Alcatraz, we just hopped on a trolley car.

We've stayed at Pier 2620 twice and would definitely recommend it. It was so handy for all the attractions and great to be able to pop back to during the day if we needed to. The first time we stayed we had a room facing the street but we didn't find it noisy. The second time we had a room facing the inner courtyard which in my opinion was nicer.
Lots of places to eat and drink very close by, we'd definitely recommend The Hoolywood Cafe for breakfast - we didn't eat again until the evening!

We have just booked Hotel Zephyr for our upcoming trip. Its lovely at night to just be able to walk to the wharf and wander around. Union square is just shops. I was happy we had not chosen there last time as we nearly had. Hope you find a decent priced hotel you are happy with. Have you looked at Columbus Motor Inn?
Ha ha yes you do I've had my eyes opened tbh. There I was with bargain flights lol didn't think to consider all the other stuff ha ha

Food wise, we were on the doorstep of IHOP, Denny’s, McD, Chipotle and many many more(specifically Boudin Bakery, an absolute SF must!). We used the HOHO bus to get to Union Square, and the cable car to return, then got the cable car there and back later because it was so much fun. I ummed and ahhed about location, but this was DEFINITELY the right choice for my family(we were at the Sheraton).
Thank you sounds great - ding think I have enough days there

We did the Famous tour. It was brilliant! A definite highlight of our trip. We saw places we wouldn't have seen otherwise so it was a godsend for our short trip. Our tour was with Dylan himself and it was amazing to hear the passion he has for SF and learn about it from him.

I'd also recommend the Alcatraz night tour which was just fabulous. Places sell out quickly so be on the ball if you want to do it
