San Francisco Hotels/Areas
Hi all
Trying to find a decent priced hotel in San Fran, my head is hurting looking at all the different ones. We've never been to San Fran before so... which area is best to stay in? Any recommendations on hotels? Thanks in advance.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Express Fisherman's wharf, it is a touristy area , but we were tourists walking distance to restaurants, cable cars, trams etc, others prefer to stay in the city and be closer to the shops, just depends what you prefer. Whichever you choose it's easy to get around.

We too have been to San fransisco before stayed at Fishermans Wharf good location for getting around. Last time we stayed at The Suites at Fishermans Wharf at the bottom of Hyde Street not available for our dates this time got a good price for the Marriott SF FW did think we wouldn't be able to stay in this area as prices so high but keep looking daily as good deals do come up but you have to be quick.

We stayed at the holiday inn fisherman's wharf - we really liked the location in the thick of the Bay Area and the hotel was reasonably priced.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf and it was ok. Twice though now we have stayed at the Argonaut just round the corner on the Wharf. It is more expensive but has character and good rooms. Both hotels are at the quieter end of the wharf and close to the cable car turnaround. Jack's Bar by the Argonaut has good casual meals at very competitive prices too

Union Square is another popular base. Close to the shopping areas, Chinatown and the cable car terminus. We have used The Hilton Union Square which was fine, but quite close to the Tenderlion area which can mean you see a few homeless people etc, and The Orchard Garden which was lovely and very close to the Dragon Gate entrance to Chinatown. Friends of ours have used Baldwins Hotel just off US and said it was ok too.

If you are not on a budget then I would recommend the Fairmont. Its very close to Union Square and not too far a walk from Lombard Street.
