Virgin reward flights

We have some points (around 40000 each). Does anyone know if doing reward flights, does both the outward and return journey need to fall in the standard season time? ie: cut off is 22 june then peak season starts, which is more miles, or do they calculate some for outward and some for return (I hope that makes sense - just toying with the idea as not ever used points before so finding it a bit confusing).

also, are companion flights worth doing? My teenage children dont have points so that could be an option?

Thanks

For Orlando it's 12,500 each way off peak, and 22,500 peak. They're looked at individually in terms of the peak surcharge, so if one is in peak time and one out, it'd be 35,000 return.

I've always been advised the companion flights are pretty worthless, as you have to book expensive tickets that are 99% of the time more expensive than 2 cheap tickets.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Looking at going next June/July so hopfully there will be some reasonable prices around and wont need to bother with the miles.

If you’re looking at economy, the companion voucher could work for you. It’s PE and UC where it’s not cost effective. That said, you can sometimes pick up a decent I fare.

It is sometimes far more points needed than 35,000 - ie dates around next Easter are currently 70,000 for a return flight and it's normally in the 40,000 to 65,000 range for most summer dates, plus a few other times of year...

However, a lot of the year is just 25,000 and as said, it is calculated as the amount for each way so you can pick any dates that have availability and just pay the combined miles of each one way flight

Just something to be aware of as it means 40,000 would get you flights for most of the year, but not all

I have just booked our 4th set of Orlando reward flight for next Feb, so it can certainly be done at various times of year and save you a lot of money

Sorry to jump in your thread but I have 100,000 air miles the I'm hoping to use for flights for myself and 3 children (2 of them are adults) would these be companion flights for them and will they cost the same amount of air miles?

Hi Donna,

Companion flights are a completely separate thing from using miles to pay for flights.. they are a perk you get from having certain credit cards & spending a minimum required amount on them.. the idea is you buy one flight for cash & you can then use a companion flight voucher you have earned to get a 2nd flight.

Is it Virgin miles you have? Asking as you say air miles and that's a different thing again...

If it is Virgin miles that you have then for at least part of the year, your 100,000 miles would get you 4 return reward flights - off peak dates are normally 25,000 per person

For other times of year however you would need more than 25,000 miles each (see my previous post) ..

hope that helps

We always use Miles and Money to reduce the price. The increments are in 3000 points so we save about £120 per trip.

Thanks for your reply that's a great help. Yes it's virgin miles I have and we'll be going in the October so should be 25,000 miles each 😊

Do check the cash price too. If it’s only £400pp you’d be using 100,000 miles to save £600. Effectively £0.006. That’s not a great return. In fact, that would be the same return as Miles Plus Money, where at least you’d still earn more miles.
